Block 7,080,000: Ethereum Devs Propose Activation Point for Next Hard Fork
Ethereum's open source development team members reached an agreement on the activation time of Constantinople, a proposed code change that would give users the option to update the block chain with an add-on.
At a two-week key developer conference on Friday, developers agreed to block 7,080,000 in the ethereum block chain as an enabling point for users to upgrade to new code. Simply put, if the user accepts the change through a software upgrade, the update will run when the block is mined.
According to the release manager of Afri Schoedon, Parity Ethereum client, Constantinople will be operational from January 14 to 18. This block number is expected to be introduced to the platform on the next software update.
Martin Holst Swende, head of security at the Ethereum Foundation and Go-ethereum clients, said it will include an emergency switch to delay the upgrade in case of unexpected problems.
Originally aiming for November, Constantinople will bring several design changes to simplify the platform code. We also want to reduce ether mining rewards from 3 ETH to 2 ETH per block, delaying the so-called hard bombs (difficult bombs) designed to induce frequent upgrades for 18 months.
On the phone, developers also discussed ProgPoW, a proposed change to ethereum's default behavior proof algorithm that blocks the use of special mining hardware known as ASICs in the network. While the ProgPoW implementation is running smoothly, the developer has not yet decided whether to include it in the proposed software upgrade.
"We have options and are making a decision later," Swend said.
Developers have also discussed ethereum 1x, and the current proposed goal in 2019 is another upgrade. Several working groups described the progress, but emphasized it was in the early stages of development.
"ProgPoW is not exactly what we are committed to, or determined to do, it is the same as the working group we discussed today," said Hudson Jameson, communications director at the Ethereum Foundation.
Jameson also said a discussion on the roadmap for the ethereum 1x upgrade will be publicly available through a discussion on social media. This distinguishes notes from previous meetings that were not filled in and published the facts according to the Chatham House rules.
"We are going to have an open meeting right now," Jameson said.
